Ukrainians to Seek Justice for Losses in Russia’s Invasion

Starting from Thursday, Ukrainians who have suffered the loss of close relatives due to Russia’s invasion will have the opportunity to file claims for compensation. The Register of Damages for Ukraine, established in The Hague last year, is now accepting requests to address the damage, loss, and injury caused by Moscow’s aggression on Feb. 24, 2022.

Family Members Eligible for Compensation

The Register has expanded its scope to include parents, spouses, civil partners, and children of individuals who lost their lives during the invasion. Other family members may also be considered eligible if they can demonstrate a legitimate interest by proving close ties and elements of dependence with the deceased.

Process for Filing Claims

To file a claim, individuals need to provide information about their identity, the deceased person’s identity, their relationship with the deceased, and the circumstances leading to the death. Claims can be submitted through the popular Ukrainian digital system Diia, which is used by over 20 million Ukrainians.

Current Status and Future Expectations

As of now, the Register has received more than 13,000 claims amounting to over 800 million euros. Additional categories of claims are anticipated to be introduced in the near future. The ultimate goal is to determine a financial total that could be extracted as reparations from Moscow.

The conflict in Ukraine has entered its third year, with the situation on the battlefield becoming more precarious as fighting intensifies. The Register’s initiative signifies a significant step towards addressing the personal suffering caused by the invasion and providing families with a means to seek justice and recognition for their profound losses.
