North Korean Troops Pause Advance in Russian Kursk Region
North Korean troops have taken a temporary step back from their frontline positions in Russia’s Kursk region, following significant losses in recent clashes with Ukrainian forces. The situation was brought to light by Commander “Puls” of the 1st Combat Divers Battalion of Special Operations Forces during an exclusive interview with Sky News. He emphasized that this halt in forward operations is likely a brief respite, with expectations of the North Korean forces returning to combat activities shortly.
Witnessing North Korean soldiers in action has revealed some alarming insights. Reports from Ukrainian forces indicate that these soldiers exhibit unparalleled discipline and resolve, often to their detriment. They have been seen advancing in large groups resembling scenes from World War Two, making them easy targets for modern drone and artillery strikes despite their unwavering push forward, a behavior attributed to what Ukrainian commanders describe as “brainwashing.”
Gathering forensic evidence from the battlefield has provided crucial information on the North Korean deployment. Ukrainian special forces recently undertook a mission to collect DNA samples and documents from around 25 North Korean soldiers who perished in a drone and artillery assault. Noteworthy discoveries included the soldiers carrying only ammunition and chocolate as supplies, lacking even basic essentials like water bottles. Personal items found on the deceased soldiers, such as letters, family photographs, and handwritten notes about their wartime experiences, shed light on their humanity amidst the chaos of conflict.
In addition to their unique behavior, the appearance and equipment of North Korean troops have also drawn attention. Commander Puls remarked on their impeccable grooming standards, likening them to models, and noted their superior equipment compared to some Russian units, albeit without heavy armor and utilizing golf buggies for ammunition transport. Of particular significance is their fierce determination to avoid capture, resorting to self-inflicted harm rather than surrender, often declaring allegiance to “General Kim Jong Un” in their final moments.
Challenges in coordination between North Korean and Russian forces have surfaced due to language barriers, leading to instances of accidental targeting of Russian positions by North Korean units. Moreover, while North Korean troops boldly engage Ukrainian forces at a high cost, Russian counterparts have struggled to capitalize on these advances, resulting in missed opportunities on the battlefield.
Although neither Moscow nor Pyongyang has officially acknowledged the deployment, Western intelligence estimates suggest that approximately 11,000 North Korean troops have been sent to support Russian operations, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosing that around 4,000 of these troops have been casualties since entering the conflict zone last month.
