North Macedonia Strengthens Ukraine’s EU Ties through Integration Deal
In a significant move to bolster Ukraine’s ties with the European Union, the Ukrainian government has announced the signing of a memorandum with the Republic of North Macedonia, a key NATO member. This agreement aims to enhance cooperation in European integration efforts and strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
Historic Support and Cooperation
Throughout the challenging times of the 1990s, amidst conflicts in the Balkans, Ukraine stood by North Macedonia, offering crucial support, especially in military cooperation. Recognizing North Macedonia’s independence in 1993, Ukraine has been a steadfast ally, providing military assistance that includes weapons, ammunition, and training for Ukrainian soldiers. With contributions like 30 T-72 tanks and various aircraft, North Macedonia has shown unwavering commitment to aiding Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
Memorandum for Enhanced Collaboration
On 18 January, Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olha Stefanishyna, and North Macedonia’s Minister for European Affairs, Orhan Murtezani, came together in Kyiv to sign a memorandum aimed at deepening cooperation in EU accession efforts. Stefanishyna expressed gratitude to North Macedonia for its support in preparing Ukraine for the EU screening process, emphasizing the valuable contribution of their expertise to Ukraine’s success.
Murtezani highlighted the importance of sharing experiences during the EU enlargement process, noting North Macedonia’s completed screening process and readiness to support Ukraine’s journey towards EU membership. The memorandum outlines key areas of cooperation, including aligning national legislation with EU laws, implementing EU policies, and sharing expertise in crucial areas like the rule of law and democratic institutions.
Cultural Exchange and Continued Support
Additionally, Deputy Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine, Andrii Nadzhos, met with Murtezani at the Saint Sophia Cathedral National Reserve in Kyiv to discuss preserving Ukraine’s cultural heritage, security assistance, and expanding cooperation in culture and strategic communications. Nadzhos expressed gratitude for North Macedonia’s steadfast support in Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression, while Murtezani reaffirmed his country’s commitment to international decisions supporting Ukraine.
Through these initiatives and collaborations, North Macedonia and Ukraine are laying a strong foundation for enhanced cooperation, mutual support, and shared progress towards EU membership.
