France and Norway Confirm Timely Jet Fighter Deliveries to Ukraine
France and Norway have reaffirmed their commitment to delivering jet fighters to Ukraine on schedule, providing critical support in the face of Russia’s invasion. The two countries’ defense ministers, Sebastien Lecornu and Bjorn Arild Gram, made the announcement during a meeting in Oslo on Thursday.
France’s Contribution
France has pledged to provide an unspecified number of French-made Mirage 2000-5s to Ukraine during the first quarter of 2025. Minister Lecornu emphasized that the delivery timeline is being met, despite reports suggesting that three aircraft were due to be delivered by January 20. He acknowledged the sensitivity of delivering jet fighters to a country at war but assured that France would fulfill its promise.
Norway’s Support
On the other hand, Norway has promised Ukraine six US-made F-16s to bolster its defense capabilities against Russian aggression. Minister Gram confirmed that the “first batch” of F-16s had already been delivered, maintaining that Norway is on schedule to fulfill its commitment. However, he refrained from disclosing operational details regarding the fighter jets.
Enhancing Military Cooperation
In a show of solidarity, the two ministers signed a letter of intent aimed at strengthening military cooperation, particularly in safeguarding underwater infrastructure. This initiative comes in response to the looming threat of hybrid warfare posed by Russia. Notably, the French navy has placed an order with Norway’s Kongsberg Maritime for the Hugin seabed exploration vehicle, capable of diving to a depth of 6,000 meters.
Furthermore, France is vying with the United States, Britain, and Germany to sell five defense and intervention frigates to Norway. Gram confirmed that Oslo would announce its decision on this matter within the year, underscoring the ongoing collaboration between the two nations in the realm of defense.
