Russia Claims Control Over Kurakhove in Latest Ukraine War Update
Russian authorities have made a bold claim, stating that they have taken full control of Kurakhove in the Donetsk region. However, the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) are denying these reports, asserting that there are ongoing battles in the city and that they have repelled 27 attacks. This conflicting information has created a tense situation in the region, with both sides standing firm in their positions.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced this development on Monday, Jan. 6, stating that the Russian army has established control over what they deem as an “important logistics hub.” According to their statement, this control has significantly disrupted the rear and technical support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine group in the Donetsk sector. The ministry also claimed that 26 AFU battalions, totaling over 15,000 soldiers, had defended Kurakhove during the conflict.
However, the Ukrainian military officials have not confirmed the loss of Kurakhove. The AFU’s Khortytsia Operational and Strategic Group of Forces has reported that the enemy is carrying out assault actions in various urban areas around Kurakhove. Efforts are ongoing to detect and eliminate these enemy assault groups attempting to infiltrate Ukrainian combat formations.
### Ongoing Clashes in Kurakhove
The main efforts of Russian forces have been concentrated in several key areas, including Slovyanka, Petropavlivka, Kurakhove, and Dachne. The most intense clashes have taken place in the industrial zone of the Kurakhivska TPP and the pipe factory on the western outskirts of the city.
Before the conflict escalated, Kurakhove was home to around 18,000 residents and served as an important industrial center in southern Donbas. Its strategic location on the Zaporizhzhia-Donetsk highway made it a crucial logistics hub for Ukrainian forces during previous battles near Mariinka, Vuhledar, and Krasnohorivka.
