The 155th “Anna of Kyiv” Separate Mechanized Brigade, a French-trained Ukrainian military unit, is currently under investigation for allegations of mismanagement and desertion. The French Ministry of Defense has chosen not to comment on the situation, while Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) has initiated a probe, as reported by Suspilne.
The brigade, stationed in Donetsk Oblast near Pokrovsk, has been a primary target of Russia’s ground assaults for an extended period. Journalist Yurii Butusov uncovered on Facebook that the brigade encountered significant organizational obstacles following their training in France. Most soldiers lacked adequate experience, with only 51 having served over a year, 459 serving less than a year, and 1,414 being recruits with less than two months of service. Approximately 150 fighters were sent for training without completing basic preparation.
Organizational Challenges and Desertion
An investigation by the Land Forces command commission attributed the desertion of around 50 soldiers in France to brigade commander Dmytro Riumshin’s inadequate personnel management. Consequently, the commander, along with several staff officers and battalion commanders, was relieved of their duties. This leadership shake-up led to further confusion under new leadership unfamiliar with the brigade’s circumstances.
Personnel Losses and Equipment Shortages
Between September and November, the brigade saw an influx of over 4,000 recruits enlisted through territorial recruitment centers without proper screening. By December’s first week, 198 cases of unauthorized absence were recorded. As combat operations commenced, personnel losses escalated due to poor organization and inadequate preparation. Additionally, the brigade faced shortages of essential equipment such as drones, electronic warfare systems, and defective mortars.
DBR Investigation and French Response
The State Bureau of Investigation is examining the reported facts under criminal proceedings concerning abuse of power and desertion. On the other hand, the French Defense Ministry confirmed training and equipping a Ukrainian brigade of approximately 2,000 soldiers for combined arms operations. They emphasized that the training involved French equipment intended for transfer to Ukraine, with soldiers returning home with their gear afterward. The Ministry refrained from commenting on the ongoing investigation, highlighting that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were responsible for personnel selection and deployment conditions.
As the investigation unfolds, it is crucial to address the systemic issues within the 155th “Anna of Kyiv” Separate Mechanized Brigade to ensure accountability, proper training, and equipment for the soldiers serving on the front lines. The safety and effectiveness of the brigade are paramount in defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
