Ukrainian Steel Giant Revolutionizes Armor Protection for Patriot Air Defense Systems
In a groundbreaking move for military innovation, Ukraine’s leading steel producer, Metinvest Group, has unveiled a revolutionary armored protection system for the control module of the MIM-104 Patriot air defense system. This development marks a significant advancement in military technology and underscores Ukraine’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities.
The Birth of a Game-Changing Initiative
The announcement, made by Metinvest Group’s press service on 3 January 2025, revealed that the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Oleksandr Myronenko, spearheaded the development of this cutting-edge armor protection system. Myronenko stated, “We developed the project from scratch in a month and a half, and, following the blueprints, manufactured a shield for the crews of the Patriot surface-to-air missile system using Metinvest’s Ukrainian armor steel.”
The protective shield, a cornerstone of Rinat Akhmetov’s Steel Front defense initiative, is composed of nearly 200 armored steel plates with thicknesses of up to 8 mm. Despite its substantial weight exceeding 2.6 tonnes, the shield does not compromise the system’s functionality or mobility.
A Testament to Metinvest’s Expertise
Metinvest’s utilization of 30KhN2MA grade steel underscores the company’s commitment to producing armor with superior wear resistance, strength, toughness, and resistance to mechanical stress. Prior to this achievement, Metinvest had already demonstrated its proficiency by crafting steel screens for a variety of military vehicles, including T-64 and T-72 tanks, American M1 Abrams tanks, and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles.
The company’s ambitious plans also include integrating protection systems for different Leopard 2 tank modifications, showcasing their dedication to advancing military technology. To date, Metinvest has supplied over 300 screens to the military, solidifying its reputation as a key player in the defense industry.
