Mykolaiv Oblast, a region in Ukraine, successfully defended itself against a recent drone attack launched by Russian forces. On the morning of 29 December, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia had deployed ten Shahed-type drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles from Crimea targeting only Mykolaiv Oblast. In addition, six S-300/S-400 surface-to-air missiles were fired at Sumy and Kursk oblasts from Russia’s Belgorod Oblast.

Unusually, the drone assault on Mykolaiv was relatively small-scale, with only ten drones being deployed. This is a significant departure from Russia’s typical drone attacks, which usually involve a much larger number of drones striking various regions across Ukraine. It is speculated that the Russians may have reserved more drones for upcoming New Year’s Eve and Day attacks.

Despite the limited scale of the attack, Ukrainian air defense units, electronic warfare systems, and mobile fire groups managed to intercept and neutralize nine of the drones over Mykolaiv Oblast. The Air Force issued air alerts in the region around 23:30 and 00:30, which were lifted by 1:30.

The Mykolaiv Oblast Military Administration provided details of the overnight attacks, revealing that the drones targeted Ochakiv and the Chornomorsk community. Fires were ignited by the debris from intercepted drones, causing damage to several buildings. Fortunately, firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blazes, and there were no reported casualties.

In a separate incident, a 49-year-old employee of an energy infrastructure facility in Chornomorsk was injured when falling debris sparked a fire at an administrative building. The individual’s condition was reported as satisfactory following prompt medical attention.

The target of the S-300 missiles launched by Russia remains unclear, as the Sumy Oblast Military Administration’s report did not reference the missile attacks. Instead, the focus was on three overnight attacks on border areas, which resulted in damage to a civilian vehicle.

The successful defense of Mykolaiv Oblast against the drone attack showcases the resilience and effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense systems in the face of external threats. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions in the region and the need for continued vigilance to protect the country’s sovereignty and security.
