Czech Firm Secretly Delivers Nuclear Reactor Parts to Ukraine Amid Russian Strikes
In a bold move to support Ukraine amid ongoing Russian strikes, Czech company Škoda JS, a part of the ČEZ Group based in Plzeň, has secretly delivered eight critical reactor drives to Ukraine’s Rivne Nuclear Power Plant. This delivery comes as Russia continues its relentless daily air assaults on residential areas and civilian infrastructure, specifically targeting Ukraine’s energy facilities with missile and drone attacks since October 2022.
The Secret Delivery
The company spokesperson, Karel Samec, revealed that the delivery includes eight drives for two VVER-440 reactors at the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant. These drives play a crucial role in ensuring stable reactor performance and precise output regulation. Despite the ongoing Russian attacks, Škoda JS successfully completed the delivery, with most of the equipment already installed and operational at the plant.
Unique Equipment Supply
Škoda JS remains the sole global manufacturer capable of supplying this specialized equipment for Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Petr Altschul, the Commercial Director, highlighted that the company’s unique position fills a critical gap as alternative production exists only in Russia. Moreover, another ČEZ subsidiary, ÚJV Řež, contributed to the efforts by shipping a specialized 173-meter cable weighing 13 tons to enhance the protective structure of a reactor in Ukraine.
Future Plans and Support
Looking ahead, Škoda JS is in negotiations for a new order involving a modernized version of control rod drives for the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant. Additionally, the company plans to expand the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant with additional VVER units. Samec emphasized that their experience from previous projects, like the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant in Slovakia, will be invaluable in these upcoming endeavors.
As we witness the unwavering support and solidarity between nations during these challenging times, it’s crucial to recognize the impact of such actions on the global stage. The delivery of critical reactor parts by Škoda JS not only highlights the importance of international cooperation but also underscores the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people in the face of adversity.
